Hasegawa F-14D, VF-31 Tomcatters
by David

Here's my last entry for this
Tomcat GB, a Hasegawa 1/48 F-14D, "Tomcatter 100". I used
Yellowhammer decals, Superscale decals, TwoBobs weapon stencils and a bit of the
Eduard photo-etched set (which i won't be buying ever
again)
Paint was Gunze Acrylics and Gunze Metallizers
I had to mix the decals because yellowhammer's decals were lacking in some areas. Their stencils nearly disappeared when placed on the body,
and I did try Superscale's ones but those were too obvious, so i went for the more "low-viz" look.
I used the Superscale stuff mainly for the underside, like the "NAVY" word and the b/no. The big tail decal,
from Superscale took a lot of micro sol to get it to settle, and some touch ups as the decal was a little too small. yellowhammer's one had
some problems, as I recall Brian Marbrey saying. The insides of the tail were
Superscale also, as yellowhammer didn't provide them
I lost the port vertical stab anti-collision light to the carpet monster
Putting the exhaust area together was quite depressing, as I had painted everything and
realized the exhaust sub assembly didn't fit very well with the main body, especially the squarish area.
I loaded her with one phoenix, 2 sidewinders, 1 sparrow, 2 GBU-12s.
Phoenix stencils came from Hobbydecal dry transfers, and I have to say that after my experience,
I won't be using dry transfers again. Twobobs weapon stencils were also quite hard to put on the missiles
as they were a tad too big and were quite a beeyatch to move around
Much preshading, post-shading was used to dirty the aircraft, but I feel it's still lacking.
Thanks for looking, and thanks to Steve and everyone at ARC for a great GB all around!
