GROUP BUILD ENTRY no.92
Raffle no. 83

1/48 R/M F-14A, VF-84 Jolly Rogers

This is the second of fur submissions I plan to enter in the group build: a 1/48th Revell/Monogram F-14A (kit #5803) in high-vis markings of the squadron commander's aircraft of VF-84 Jolly Rogers. The decals are an after-market Microscale sheet contributed by a fellow ARC member whose name I can't remember, and a few OOB decals to make up for ones not covered by the Microscale sheet, such as the national insignias and NAVY decals, to name a few. The loadout is OOB, save for the Phoenix on the aft fuselage station, which I took from my Revellogram F-15C kit and cut the fins on one side off so it would fit, and reflects a popular Cold War-era loadout which isn't very commonly depicted on most models (Sparrows and Sidewinders on the glove pylons, two Phoenixes on the forward pallets, and a third Sparrow on the aft fuselage station ahead of the arrester hook, and fuel tanks under the intake nacelles). The chin pod is from the Black Box Bombcat kit (originally had a scratch-built franken-pod made from the kit-supplied Delta and blister pods, but ditched it when I got the Black Box set for my 1/48th F-14D kit), and the fuel tanks were contributed by another ARC member whose name I can't remember, and the exhaust nozzles were contributed by Fury on ARC, and walkway decals from Looks Like He Can Fly, though these decals unfortunately are nearly the same color as the paint scheme, and can only be seen upon very careful inspection, if you know what you're looking for. It was painted with Model Master & Testor enamels and acrylics, with an overall coat of Testors semi-gloss clear and Testors Dullcote over the decals on the flat surfaces like the canopy frame and wing fold overlaps. Like my previous entry, this one was also partially-finished when the group build came about, and the build motivated me to finish her. The decals went on beautifully, despite their age (actually looked better than the kit decals), the only problem being the modex number on the left side, which tore slightly, but some very careful touchups made this unnoticeable. I originally decided to do this model in honor of my favorite Tomcat squadron, VF-84 Jolly Rogers, as seen in The Final Countdown. (I recently learned about some minor errors in my paint scheme, but it was too late to correct them as the decals had already been applied.)
